About the programme

Language in Action (LiA) is a British Council accredited provider of junior English language programmes. We run Year-round and summer camps across multiple university campuses in the UK, combining English lessons, cultural activities, excursions, and a fully supervised residential experience.

Our summer programmes welcome students aged 11 to 18. For our year-round programmes, we accept students from 8 to 18 years old. Students are grouped by age and English level to ensure the best learning environment for everyone.

Yes. Language in Action is accredited by the British Council, which inspects our centres against the UK Quality and Safeguarding Standards for providers of English language programmes for under-18s. We are also a member of English UK, the national association of accredited English language centres in the UK.

Our programmes are fully all-inclusive. The fee covers accommodation, all meals, English lessons, a full activity and excursions programme, airport transfers (where booked), and 24/7 staff supervision.

Students can join for a minimum of one week and can stay for multiple weeks depending on the centre and programme. Please check our price list for specific dates and durations available at each centre.

The Deluxe package includes 14 nights of full-board accommodation, 30 hours of English tuition over 2 weeks, course materials and an end-of-course certificate, 4 full-day excursions, 8 half-day excursions, 10 evening activities (including night excursions), a welcome party and a last night party, weekly room cleaning and communal area cleaning, bed linen and on-site laundry facilities, free Wi-Fi, 24-hour security and reception, transportation for all included activities and excursions, and constant LiA staff presence in-centre and during all activities.

The following are not included in any package and must be purchased separately: travel insurance, airport/station transfers, travelcard or bus pass for independent use of public transport, and any optional extra activities not listed in the package.

Academic experience

All students take an online AI-powered speaking test before arrival and a written assessment on arrival. They are then placed in groups according to their level and their age, to ensure they are appropriately challenged and can make real progress.

Students receive 15 hours of English lessons per week, scheduled either in the morning or afternoon depending on the centre and programme. Lessons focus on speaking, listening, vocabulary, and real-world communication skills.

We use a communicative approach that encourages students to use English in real situations. Lessons are interactive and designed to build confidence as well as competence. All teachers are qualified and experienced in teaching English to young learners.

Yes, all students receive a certificate of attendance on completion of the programme, detailing their English level and the programme they completed.

Mobile phones can help language learning when they are used with clear rules and structured tasks, but they can also reduce attention if unmanaged. Students are asked that their phones stay silent or face down unless used in a learning activity.

Students’ spoken English ability is assessed and measured in our pre-arrival Speaking Placement test. Through a click of a link, they engage with an avatar answering a few questions which assesses their range of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and fluency using AI technology. Running side-by-side with our grammar/vocabulary written test that students take on Day 1 of their course, we ensure an accurate way of assessing students’ true English abilities.

English ability is divided into 6 main levels based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) from Beginner (A1) to Proficiency (C2) levels.

Students are assigned to classes primarily by English level. Age is also considered, especially for younger learners.

A typical Language in Action class during the summer has 18 students. Recognising the benefits of a multi-lingual, multi-cultural student body, we strive to organise our classes with a good nationality mix whenever possible.

Centres & accommodation

We have centres across the UK including London (multiple campuses), Manchester, Liverpool, and Canterbury. Each centre is based on a university or school campus with secure, supervised residential facilities.

Yes. All centres operate within secure campus environments. Staff are present 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Students are never unsupervised during programme hours, and all evening and leisure time is fully monitored.
Most of our centres offer single en-suite rooms. Twin or multi-bed rooms may be available depending on the centre and programme type. In all cases, room allocations strictly follow British Council safeguarding guidelines, ensuring students are roomed appropriately by age and gender. Please contact us if you have specific requirements.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included every day. We can accommodate any dietary requirements, allergies, and religious dietary needs. Please inform us at the time of booking.

Bed linen is included at all our centres. Towels are provided at most centres, but we recommend checking the specific details for your centre in the pre-arrival information you will receive before your start date.

Yes, please pack your own hairdryer as these are not provided at our centres. Remember to bring a UK plug adaptor if needed.

Yes. All students must be back in the centre by 10:30 PM on Sunday to Thursday, and by 11:00 PM on Friday and Saturday. These rules are in place for the safety and wellbeing of all students and are strictly enforced by our staff.

Each centre provides access to dedicated laundry facilities linked to an app, which students can use to pay directly online. There is no need for coins. Prices are generally around £3-4 per wash and £2-3 for the dryer.

The UK is largely cashless, so students can pay by card almost everywhere. We recommend bringing a debit or prepaid card rather than large amounts of cash. The amount of pocket money needed will depend on personal spending habits, but budget for any optional extras, personal shopping, and snacks outside of meals.

Yes. Every student receives an ID card on arrival which includes the centre’s emergency contact number. This number is also shared with parents and group leaders in the pre-arrival emails sent before the start of the programme.

Rooms are guaranteed from 16:00 on arrival day, though we will accommodate earlier check-in where possible. Dinner is always included on arrival day. On departure day, rooms must be vacated by 09:00. Breakfast is always included, and a packed breakfast will be provided if you leave before the canteen opens.

Yes, this is permitted, but it must be arranged in advance. A permission form must be completed before the student can be released into the care of a parent, relative, or designated person. Please contact the centre team as early as possible to arrange this.

Activities & excursions

Depending on the programme schedule, students enjoy a full activity programme either in the morning or afternoon, including sports, excursions, and workshops. In the evenings, there is always something going on, from speed dating socials and arts and crafts to games nights and parties. All activities are designed to encourage students to use their English naturally in fun, informal settings.
Students visit some of the UK’s most iconic attractions, which vary by centre and location. London centres, for example, include visits to landmarks such as the Camden Town, the British Museum, and Buckingham Palace. Full excursion details are available on each centre page.
All excursions are fully supervised by Language in Action staff. Strict student-to-staff ratios are always maintained in line with British Council requirements and our own safeguarding policies.

Welfare & safeguarding

Yes. Student safety is our highest priority. We operate comprehensive safeguarding policies in line with UK legislation and British Council standards.
All staff undergo full safer recruitment checks and onboarding in line with our Safer Recruitment and Safeguarding policies. A welfare officer is present at every centre.
We have trained first-aiders on site at all times. In the case of illness, students are cared for by our welfare team. For medical matters requiring professional attention, we accompany students to local GP or urgent care facilities and notify parents promptly.
Our welfare and pastoral staff are trained to support students who feel homesick or anxious. We find that most students quickly settle thanks to the structured programme and the international, welcoming community on each campus.

Yes. Students are permitted to keep their mobile phones and can contact family at designated times outside of lesson and activity hours.

We expect all students to follow our code of conduct, which is explained clearly during the induction on arrival. Minor issues are dealt with informally by teaching or activity staff. If behaviour continues or becomes more serious, we follow a formal disciplinary procedure that includes verbal warnings, written warnings, and where necessary, expulsion from the programme.

Expulsion is always a last resort and is reserved for serious or repeated misconduct, such as behaviour that endangers others, breaking UK law, or continued disruption after formal warnings. In all cases, parents and the agent are informed at every stage of the process. If a student is sent home, Language in Action ensures they are safely escorted to their departure point, and travel arrangements are coordinated with parents and the relevant contacts. No refund is due in the event of expulsion. Full details are available in our Behaviour Policy.

Yes. Individual students (those not travelling with a school group) are given additional attention by our centre welfare team. Parents are kept informed of any significant issues, including any disciplinary matters. Our Welfare Officer is the main point of contact for individual students throughout their stay, and the emergency contact number provided on the student ID card and in the pre-arrival, emails is available to parents at all times.
